Following is a list of some probable and most desirable final-year mechanical (BE) project topics. These topics may cover the study, design, and analysis of each component of a project.

Projects related to Machine/Thermal Design

This kind of project involves project work related to machine design, drafting, and strength of material expertise. This may include stress analysis, strain rate, failure study, and size calculation using either solving the related equations or using analysis software like Ansys. The list is as follows:

Design and fabrication of shell and tube type heat exchanger

This project involves the fabrication of a shell and tube heat exchanger using the knowledge of heat and mass transfer you studied in either 5th or 6th semester. This also requires the use of the TEMA standards if you wish your project to comply with the international heat exchanger standards. The design requires the use of heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics as well as machine design concepts. 

Design of domestic refrigerator

The domestic refrigerator is a thermal system which pumps the heat from low temperature parts of refrigerator to high temperature region i.e. room. The design of domestic refrigerator involves the individual design of its principal parts like refrigerant compressor (power consuming device), condenser (as a heat exchanger), capillary tube (as expansion device) and evaporator (as a heat exchanger). The thermal design involves the calculation of size of the elements of these devices using thermal engineering concepts (including thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics)  and strength of materials. One can even choose design of Split air conditioner or design of Air cooler as project topic. The working principle is same in all these cases.

Design of domestic water pump
Design of punching machine for spiral binding
Design of air compressor to be used in garage

Projects for improvement of systems at your place

You can also take projects to make improvements to existing systems. Students can change/modify or improve any existing setup in college. Some of the topics include,

1. Improvement or development of laboratory in your department

2. Modification of existing machine/setup to suit special needs. This can be your seniors work and you can extend it to next objectives. 

3. Research on design and fabrication facility at your college level in workshop

4. Try to find and work on the problems your institute facing. You can use engineering minds to solve it. Think of such problems and take one and use it as project work. 

Projects based on Research and Analysis/Software:

1. Finite element analysis (FEM or FEA) of common mechanical components of the machine which fail frequently due to improper design. One can use ANSYS software. 

2. Fluid flow analysis by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with ANSYS software or FLUENT and GAMBIT to reduce pressure drop, elbows, reduction in the size of the domain, etc in fluid domains. 

3. Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) Projects. In real life, any machine works with working substance which might be fluid (liquid or gas) and this may exert a force or affect the working of structural element of the machine. So, fluid interacts with the structure. This requires knowledge of finite element methods and compurational fluid dyanamics. 

 

Industrial Projects:

Visit the nearest industry and find what can be taken as project work. This may be the development of any department or section with respect to change or modification in any machine of that industry or optimizing any machine to increase productivity. Consult your seniors and teacher to help you to choose the right and challenging final year topics.

Have the self-confidence to do your project work and get the work done and be motivated to do your work sincerely so that you do not feel your work is a burden. Motivate yourself and get fuel for work to be done.
