Why cooling capacity unit of domestic refrigerator and Air Conditioner (AC) is different?

Have you ever wondered, Why capacity of the domestic refrigerator and Air Conditioner (AC) is different though both are refrigeration system? What is the basic difference between them with respect to the cooling capacity?

The capacity of the domestic refrigerator is normally rated in 'Litre'. Litre is actually a unit of volume and it is applicable to the domestic refrigerator while dealing with space/volume to be cooled. Thus, liter capacity actually indicates the volume or space to be cooled by the domestic refrigerator.

On the other hand, the capacity of Air Conditioner (AC) is given by term 'Ton of refrigeration'.

What is one Ton refrigeration?

What will be the change in room temperature if door of refrigerator kept open?

What will be the change in room temperature if door of refrigerator kept open? This question is often asked at mechanical engineering job interview and also in engineering examination.

Ans: NO, Rather, temperature of the room will increase over the time, not instantly.

Why?

To understand this, let us first understand the working of domestic refrigerator. It contains four different equipment namely compressor, condenser, capillary tube and evaporator and it also has refrigerant or working fluid/medium which continuously circulating through all these four different equipment to enable heat transfer and thus cooling. The refrigerant while passing through different parts, changes phase and this enable cooling in domestic refrigerator.

Quiz-1 Objective questions in mechanical engineering: Basic of thermodynamics-1

This is a multiple choice question quiz. To appear for the test, you need to enter following details at the quiz interface. 1. Your name and passcode i.e. thermotest

By the end of quiz, you will get your score out of 10 as well as answer keys. So, get ready to check your knowledge in basics of thermodynamics.

Mechanical Engineering interview questions asked at Job interviews of big companies

This is a compilation of few important interviews questions which were asked at big and reputed companies interviews.

What will happen if diesel engine make to run with petrol ? (Hyundai)

When petrol is added to diesel engine, diesel engine will start but will face difficulty in smooth run as petrol (which having low flash point of -43 C) experiences detonation before the actual compression takes place in diesel engine. Petrol also deteriorates the lubricating system of diesel engine. Hence it is not advisable to run diesel engine with petrol. Here one counter questions comes,

What will happen if petrol engine make to run with diesel?

Most frequently asked questions in any mechanical engineering interview

Each and every interview starts with question from the chairman of interview. He normally asks candidate to say few words about family and education background. Normally he asks, or start the interview by asking, 'Tell me about yourself'. Candidate should reply to this question by giving just brief overview of name, education background, family and family background.

Mechanical Engineering interview normally contains following normal layout of questions.

Important interview questions about mechanical engineering - Thermodynamics

Normally any interviewer tries to check whether a candidate is suitable for present job or not. Based on the type of job or job profile, interview asks basic questions from different subjects. If student has grasped the engineering syllabus or course from basic concepts point of view, he/she must be able to answer the following questions. Read the following interview questions about 'thermodynamics' subject. These questions might be helpful in GATE examination too.

My NPCIL Interview Experience at Mumbai - Anushaktinagar

My NPCIL  Interview Experience at Mumbai, Anushaktinagar

I appeared for NPCIL interview on 05-10-2010 at Anushaktinagar at Mumbai. As I did M.Tech, I was shortlisted directly based on the qualification of M. Tech in Industrial Process Equipment Design (IPED) .

The interview panel was consists of 6-7 people from industries only, No one were from any academic institutions.

Important interview questions about mechanical engineering - Thermodynamics (Part II)

Why Specific heat at constant pressure is greater than Specific heat at constant volume?

First of all let us define Specific Heat at Constant Pressure (Cp) and Specific Heat at Constant Volume (Cv):

Specific Heat at Constant Pressure (Cp):

Specific heat at constant pressure is defined as the amount of heat required to raise/increase the temperature of a gas/substance having unit mass by one (degree C) keeping pressure constant. Unit: J/kgK

Specific Heat at Constant Volume (Cv):

Specific heat at constant volume is defined as the amount of heat required to raise/increase the temperature of a gas/substance having unit mass by one (degree C) keeping volume constant. Unit: J/kgK

Now consider the following experimental setup having piston cylinder arrangement containing gas heated by external heat source.

My Interview Experience In SVNIT as Lecturer

It is rightly said by Chanakya, "One should learn from mistake or experience of others rather than waiting for it to happen to us". This article is all about my experience of lecturer post at NIT Surat (SVNIT, Surat).

I have completed my M. Tech from the same institute with Industrial Process Equipment Design (IPED), an L&T sponsored course. I still remember that day with heavy rainfall. The number of the candidates shortlisted were 28 but out of them, only twelve come to the venue for an interview.

The Penal consist of five members including HOD - Mechanical Engineering Department, Director of SVNIT (Chairman of Interview) and other three members were from IITs from the same dept.

The interview started with a question from chairman i.e. Director of the institute. He asked, "what are you doing nowadays and what is your future planning?"  Normally the first question of any interview is asked by the chairman of interview panel and which normally asked in order to get the overall picture of the candidate including basic qualifications, family background and response of candidate. As I mentioned about my job of a lecturer at L D College of Engineering, Ahmedabad, one of the panel member asked me, "Which subjects do you teach at First year level in Engineering? I answered Element of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Graphics and Thermodynamics. After getting an overall idea about subjects, the asked me following questions one by one based on my previous questions answer.hat is EME?
  1. Why study EME (Elements of Mechanical Engineering)?
  2. What are the drives? types? what is the belt drive?
  3. How will you select belt drive and why?
  4. What is the design criteria for the shaft?
  5. Define the 'Factor of safety' in the simple sentence.
  6. What is the meaning of 'Thermodynamic equilibrium'?
  7. Thermal, mechanical and chemical equilibrium
  8. Which properties do each thermodynamics laws define?
  9. What is the meaning of flow work and its importance?
  10. What is the difference between exergy and Anergy?
  11. At which condition Mohr's Circle becomes a point?
It was a nice experience! I got selected then and working at NIT-Surat since Sept. 2010
